"The Adventures of Superman! Faster than a speeding bullet! More powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound! Look, up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman! Yes it's Superman! Strange visitor from another planet who came to Earth with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men! Superman! Who can change the course of mighty rivers! Bend steel in his bare hands! And who disguised as Clark Kent, mild mannered reporter for a great metropolitan newspaper, fights a neverending battle for truth, justice, and the American way!"

In 1951 the motion picture Superman and the Mole Men appeared in theatres across the country. Kirk Alyn had played the superhero in two previous motion picture serials (see Kirk Alyn) but this time the role was given to George Reeves (born George Keefer Brewer), an actor best known for his role as Stuart Tarlton in Gone With the Wind. By 1952 The Adventures of Superman premiered on United States television and starred the same major cast as the motion picture.

George Reeves allegedly shot himself in his home on June 16th, 1959 leaving behind countless mournful adoring fans. By the end of its run the show had lasted 6 years and an incredible 104 episodes!

VHS - There have, apparently, been some copies of all 104 episodes, as well as extras, released on VHS. The unfortunate thing is that most are bootleg copies. Some bootlegs are made up mostly of "off-the-air" recordings from TV Land complete with grainy video and the network's logo. There have been occasional copies that were made directly from 16 mm film prints. To date there has never been an official Warner Bros. VHS release.

LD - None.

DVD - To the joy of the fans of the series, Warner Bros. has released every season of The Adventures of Superman on DVD! Each box set is available online or at various retailers.
