A Super Wedding

by Scott Shinsato

This past April, I had the honor of being the best man at a friends’ wedding. This, however, was not just any wedding but a “Super” wedding. You see, my friend Chris is a Superman fan (named after the late Christopher Reeve) and he was lucky enough that his lovely bride to be Mara allowed such a specially themed wedding to take place. In all fairness, she is kind of a fan too so it was good for the both of them. What makes this a “Super” wedding you may ask? Well, the ceremony itself was for the most part a traditional wedding ceremony. Set on a beautiful sunny morning at the Luana Hills Country Club, the guests arrived and were seated before the groom and wedding party walked down the aisle. The first sign of the Super wedding was when the bride walked down the aisle… not to the traditional “Here comes the bride” organ music but to a saxophone rendition of the “Love theme from Superman” (Can you read my mind).

From there, though, the “Super” events really kicked it into high gear as guests were welcomed into the reception area by wedding posters set like Superman comics with the bride and groom dressed as Lois and the Man of Steel. A 1000 origami crane display in the design of the famous shield also greeted guests into the reception area.

After most of the guests had been seated, the lights in the room dimmed and a five minute fictional video presentation of the couple, their meeting and proposal all done with credits and music to look like the opening of a Superman movie was shown. The music then changed to the Justice League Unlimited theme as the wedding party entered dressed as various members of the Justice League! The wedding couple then entered to the theme from Superman: the Animated Series. Chris dressed in a blue suit and tie a’la Clark Kent and Mara still in her bridal gown. When the couple reached the front, Chris tore off the suit to reveal the Superman costume underneath.

Wedding favors for the guests included cookies with the various logos of the different members of the JLA and crystal vases representing the crystals from the Fortress of Solitude. The centerpiece on each table was a special bottle of wine with a custom “Superman: the Wedding” label complete with date and location of the wedding.

Speeches were made, the special ‘S’ logo cake was cut and a grand time was had by all. Many people commented on how different and fun a wedding this had been. I am truly honored that Chris and Mara allowed me to be a part of their very special day. If you or someone you know has had a “superhero” wedding or other event please share your stories and photos if possible. Till next month gang… best wishes and it’s good to be back!
